The Return of the Daiquiri

Put that frozen strawberry concoction down immediately! Daiquiris are back, but not the sugary resort version with an umbrella in it. The Cuban version

The daiquiri was invented on a whim by a man named Jennings Cox. One night in Cuba while entertaining guests, Cox found himself fresh out of gin. Wanting to continue the party, he ventured to the store and purchased the most readily available liquor: rum. He combined the rum with sugar, mineral water, lemons and ice to create a beverage his guests loved. They asked Cox the name of this delectable drink, so he quickly named it after a nearby beach in Cuba – Daiquiri. This recipe is nothing like the fru-fru frozen daiquiris typically associated with cruise ships. It’s elegant and delicious, showcasing good quality rum with a simple preparation, served neat – not slushy out of a blender.

Miss B’s Coconut Club in Mission Beach offers their interpretation of the classic Cuban cocktail recipe:

.75 oz Fresh lime juice
.75 oz of sugar syrup
Ice

Instructions

Serve in a coupe glass
