Date of the Month: Birch Aquarium

By February 20, 2018 No Comments

All February, invite a special someone to check out the 29th Annual Macy’s Museum Month with half-off admission at over 40 San Diego Museum Council museums.  Participants can pick up a Macy’s Museum Month Pass at any area Macy’s store to enjoy half-off admission to all of the participating San Diego Museum Council member museums and you can see a full list here

While all of the museum options offer a unique date idea, our top pick is Birch Aquarium on a scenic spot in coastal La Jolla. Spend a couple hours exploring the exhibits, linger over the panoramic ocean view at Tide Pool Plaza, and grab a coffee or bite from Splash Cafe. Food and beverages ARE allowed in the aquarium and a bench overlooking the coast at Tide Pool Plaza is the perfect spot to picnic with your date. Splash served fair trade coffees from Cafe Moto, roasted locally in a solar-fueled roaster, as well as sandwiches, salads, and side dishes made daily from scratch by The French Gourmet.

Don’t miss the popular dive show in the two-story, 70,000-gallon, Giant Kelp Tank showcasing an amazing underwater forest ecosystem, including Leopard Sharks, Moray Eels, and an endangered Giant Black Sea Bass.

Venture into the Infinity Cube with your date, created by London-based artist Iyvone Khoo and Scripps Institution of Oceanography marine biologist Michael Latz in an effort to better understand the role of bioluminescence — light produced by living organisms — in the marine environment.  They filmed more than six hours of footage of single-celled marine organisms called dinoflagellates reacting to various stimulants, such as the human heartbeat, music, water flow, and air pressure. Those videos have become the basis of the Infinity Cube, a temporary exhibit. The 8-foot cube surrounds you in projected and reflected larger-than-life images of bioluminescence accompanied by soundscape.
