Where to Horse Around on Opening Day

And away they go! On July 19th, thoroughbred enthusiasts will flock to Del Mar adorning giant hats and fresh-pressed suits for Opening Day. But the party doesn’t stop where the surf meets turf.   On Opening Day, Tavern is Off To The Races bringing partiers to the track by the bus load. For $80 per person, you will have transportation and booze while you cruise covered. The price also includes your track ticket. Get the party started while on the road to the races with fellow track fanatics. Arrive safely, in style and with the added convenience of not having to fight for parking. Bring the bash inland without having to venture too far from the track. Ponsaty’s in Rancho Santa Fe is the place to be! Starting at 6:00 p.m., Ponsaty’s will be slinging Kentucky Derby-inspired Mint Julips for $7 as well as $45 bottles of 1er Cru Champagne. Decked-out guests can partake in a classic Big Hat contest to toast to the Opening Day tradition. The winner will walk away with a bottle of Grand Cru Champagne. And of course, the party isn’t complete without live music, which will be provided by Roman Palacios. Dance, drink and eat your Opening Day away! Little Italy’s Loading Dock, San Diego’s newest neighborhood sports bar and grill and event center located in Little Italy, opened in March. The 21 and over family-owned bar and grill is a friendly atmosphere offering casual BBQ-style fare, San Diego craft beer options, wine, signature cocktails and the “Unloading Hour” special happy hour menu on weekdays from 4-6 p.m. Little Italy’s Loading Dock is perfect for watching Opening Day with numerous TVs for viewing sports games, an open dining area and an event center for private parties.  
Continue celebrations after Opening Day at Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa’s 4th Annual After Pony Party. Following the first race of the season, locals and travelers alike can delight their race day attire with an evening of flowing Veuve Clicquot, dancing, dining, live music, games, and more on the Croquet Lawn.
