When many people think of rum cocktails they think of fruity piña coladas or maybe a too-sweet daiquiri. To celebrate National Rum Day on August 16th, I want to introduce you to some new and different versions of cocktails that incorporate rum as a main ingredient around San Diego!

Head to Mission Beach and stop in to Miss B’s Coconut Club, a Caribbean-inspired bar and eatery that features rum in many of their creative craft cocktails. Soak up the sun on the patio, just steps from the sand, and imbibe in the Rum Cannonball, a mai-tai drink with a Miss B’s house rum blend, trini rum, fresh lime, fresh pineapple, falernum, orgeat and demerara syrup. The Caribe Welcome, which comes served in a hollowed-out coconut, is another must-try! The island-inspired blend of Puerto Rican Rum, apricot brandy, coco lopez, coconut water and fresh lime juice will leave you feeling totally refreshed.

Cloak & Petal on the corner of India and Grape Street in Little Italy offers rum cocktails beneath a blooming Japanese cherry blossom tree, including the Born & Dayzed. This tiki-inspired cocktail consists of a blend of rum from Martinique and Barbados, fresh passion fruit, citrus of lime, Caribbean spiced falernum and just a hint of absinthe.

There is no better spot to enjoy a tropical drink than on a patio with views overlooking the beach, and Pacific Beach Shore Club has just that! Feel the cool ocean breeze while relaxing with a drink or two in celebration of National Rum Day. Shore Club will be offering $10 Painkillers all day long on August 16th, with $1 of each drink purchase going to the Wingman Foundation. You can also sip the fruity Mango Tango, with Malibu Pineapple, Malibu Mango, house agave mix, Mixwell Grapefruit Soda and bitters!
