San Diego Soups to Slurp Up

January is National Soup Month so hunker down and sip savory soups at these San Diego hot spots!

Does a steaming bowl of chowder or soup sound like your cup of tea on a crisp January day? If so, look no further than Fish Shop, with locations in Pacific BeachEncinitasPoint Loma, and Hermosa Beach. Try either the Fish Shop Stew, made with assorted fresh fish simmered in a house made tomato broth, or the delicious Fish Shop Clam Chowder. Hearty clam chowder with Andouille sausage comes served in a cup or bread bowl – yum!

barleymash has an extensive menu of comfort dishes, including a seasonal Roasted Butternut Squash, Carrot and Ginger Soup. It comes topped with toasted pumpkin seeds and cinnamon chili oil. Order in a cup or opt for the bowl if you’re feeling a little hungrier.

Satisfying San Diego’s hunger for authentic Japanese cuisine and ramen, Tajima showcases a cozy menu with plenty of items perfect for chillier weather. Dive into a bowl of ramen, like the Tajima Ramen made with pork or chicken chashu, fried garlic, green onions, half a ramen egg, bean sprouts, baby arugula, sesame seeds and Japanese seaweed. Tajima has locations across the city, from Hillcrest to East Village. Or if you don’t feel like leaving your home, have your meal delivered through Postmates!

National Soup Month is the perfect time to sip a classic, like Fig Tree Cafe’s Chicken Tortilla Soup. Visit any of their three locations, in Pacific Beach, Hillcrest or Liberty Station, and warm up with a cup or bowl of the soup. The Chicken Tortilla Soup is topped with cheddar cheese, cilantro, tortilla strips, avocado and sour cream.

Although WhipHand is a newcomer to the East Village dining scene, the stylish restaurant is already making big waves with their sharable plates. During colder weather, cuddle up in a booth and taste the Rosemary French Onion Soup, served with house croutons and swiss cheese.

Pozole is a traditional Mexican soup or stew made with hominy, meat and a variety or seasonings and spices, and Oceanside’s Jalisco Cantina has one of the most authentic bowls in all of San Diego.
